The tilt test is a diagnostic investigation used to assess cardiovascular system responses to changes in body position. It helps identify the causes of syncope (fainting) and episodes of dizziness, weakness, or palpitations related to changes in blood pressure and heart rate.

When the tilt test is recommended

  • in patients with recurrent fainting episodes of unclear cause,
  • for the evaluation of unexplained dizziness or weakness,
  • to differentiate cardiac syncope from vasovagal syncope,
  • in patients suspected of having disorders of blood pressure or heart rate regulation.

How the test is performed

  • The patient is placed on a special table that is gradually tilted from a horizontal to a vertical position.
  • Continuous monitoring of the electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure is performed throughout the test.
  • The response of the heart and blood vessels to positional changes is observed.
  • In some cases, medications may be administered to provoke a characteristic response.

What information the tilt test provides

  • detection of vasovagal (neurocardiogenic) syncope,
  • evaluation of blood pressure regulation disorders (orthostatic hypotension),
  • differentiation between cardiac and reflex causes of fainting,
  • guidance for appropriate treatment and patient-specific recommendations.

Benefits for the patient

The tilt test is a non-invasive and safe procedure that reproduces, under controlled conditions, situations that may cause fainting or dizziness in daily life. The results allow the physician to establish an accurate diagnosis and provide tailored recommendations for each patient.
