Syncope – Diagnosis and Treatment

CardioPrima cardioprima.md

Syncope is a transient loss of consciousness caused by a temporary reduction in blood flow to the brain. Although many episodes may appear benign, syncope can sometimes be a sign of an underlying cardiac or neurological condition that requires prompt and thorough evaluation.

At CardioPrima, we focus on identifying the cause and preventing recurrence through a multidisciplinary cardiological and neurological approach.

When syncope evaluation is necessary

You should consult a physician if you have experienced:

  • sudden loss of consciousness, even with rapid recovery;
  • severe dizziness or near-fainting sensations;
  • palpitations preceding the episode;
  • chest pain, weakness, or cold sweating associated with the event;
  • recurrent syncopal episodes;
  • a family history of sudden cardiac death.

Evaluation at CardioPrima

Accurate diagnosis of syncope requires a comprehensive, patient-tailored assessment. Depending on the clinical presentation, the following may be recommended:

Cardiology consultation, including:

  • electrocardiogram (ECG);
  • Holter ECG monitoring;
  • exercise stress test (if indicated);
  • echocardiography;
  • ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).

Arrhythmology consultation for suspected rhythm disorders.

Tilt-table test when vasovagal syncope or autonomic dysfunction is suspected.

Neurological evaluation when symptoms suggest non-cardiac causes.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include:

  • optimization of existing cardiac therapy;
  • hydration and lifestyle recommendations;
  • treatment of arrhythmias, when appropriate;
  • pacemaker implantation in cases of severe bradycardia or conduction disorders;
  • specific measures for reflex (vasovagal) syncope, such as muscle contraction techniques and avoidance of triggering factors;
  • regular follow-up to prevent recurrence.

Service goal

Our objective is to provide patients with a comprehensive evaluation and a personalized treatment plan to reduce the risk of recurrent episodes and prevent complications.

At CardioPrima, we address each case with care, integrating cardiological, arrhythmological, and neurological expertise to ensure accurate diagnosis and complete patient care.
