Electromyography (EMG) and Electroneuromyography (ENMG)

Electromyography (EMG) and electroneuromyography (ENMG) are diagnostic tests used to assess muscle electrical activity and peripheral nerve conduction. They are essential for diagnosing neuromuscular disorders, neuropathies, and disorders of neuromuscular transmission.

At CardioPrima, the investigation is tailored to each patient: in some cases only ENMG is performed, while in others both ENMG and EMG are required, depending on medical indications.

Recommendations before the test

  • Wash the area to be examined; the skin should be clean and dry.
  • Do not apply creams, lotions, or oils to the examined areas, as they may affect signal quality.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the limbs.
  • Inform the physician about all medications you are taking, especially anticoagulants or treatments for neuromuscular conditions.
  • If available, bring:
    • a complete list of current medications;
    • previous neurological investigations (EEG, MRI, imaging studies, lab tests);
    • a referral from your attending physician.

What happens during the test

  • During ENMG, surface electrodes are applied and mild electrical impulses are delivered to assess nerve conduction.
  • During EMG, a thin needle electrode is inserted into the muscle to record electrical activity.
  • The procedure may cause mild discomfort but is generally well tolerated and does not involve significant risks.

After the test

  • You may resume normal daily activities immediately.
  • Mild local discomfort or temporary sensitivity may occur at the needle insertion site.
  • The results are analyzed by a neurologist and communicated to the patient along with appropriate recommendations.
